Although this sounds easy enough, there are a couple things to keep in mind:

Pay Attention – Beyond the fuel gauge, more modern vehicles have tons of bells and whistles to warn and remind the vehicle operator of the current fuel level. Some vehicles have multiple warning alerts including text on the display, illuminated fuel symbol, and consecutive beeps. If all these signals fail, a further sign will be that your vehicle will begin to sputter. If this happens, pull over to the side of the road quickly and safely.

Potential Damage – The fuel pump relies on the surrounding fuel as both a source of coolant and lubrication. Running your fuel tank low can cause your fuel pump to burn out and that can lead to a costly bill. All though this may not happen the first time, continued abuse by running your tank low certainly will. A good rule of thumb is to try and always plan to fill your tank up shortly after it reaches a quarter tank of fuel.

Slow Down- The most fuel efficient speed is around 55-70 KMH. Don’t make the mistake of speeding up to reach a gas station beyond this speed. When on the highway it a faster speed limit, put on your hazards to signify that you are traveling at a cautious speed. Never go over the speed limit to reach this most fuel efficient speed.

Turn off your AC- the AC puts stress on the engine and so it burns up more fuel. Keeping your windows up will also reduce the drag. This may not seem necessary, but in these situations every bit counts. Avoid stop and starts to ensure you utilize momentum that reduces the use of fuel if possible.

I think we would all agree that when it comes down to your vehicle and fuel, the worst that could happen is that you run out and need to call a tow truck. But wait; there is a second fatal mistake that could happen. Oh no! you accidently filled your vehicle with the wrong type of fuel! Diesel, regular, or premium, you have used the wrong one. This is actually a very common mistake, especially for new drivers. So what happens when:

  • you put Diesel in a Gas car?

Diesel is usually harder to mistake due to the different indicators that fueling stations use to differ between gas and diesel. However, this mistake can and does happen. Once you realize, ensure to stop driving, park and turn off your engine to minimize damage. Otherwise, the vehicle will use up the remainder gas and shutdown because the engine does not combust diesel.

What to do now? Well, the tank, associated lines and the like need to be drained. Hopefully there is no permanent damage, but best to call towing Coquitlam and have your vehicle towed to your chosen mechanic pronto.

  • you put gas in a diesel car?

This scenario can cause raise the most havoc and cause the most damage. Again, stop your car and engine and call Coquitlam Towing immediately! Diesel is a fuel and a lubricant for diesel engines, putting in gas will damage the fuel-injector pump. The gas will detonate early causing misfires, knocking and other damage needing major repair.

  • You put premium fuel in a car that does not require?

Nothing significant in the way of benefits or harm will happen here.

  • You put regular gas in a car that needs premium?

If this happens you will experience reduced performance and worse fuel economy. You may get a spark knock, and possible internal damage. However, in most cases your vehicle will be okay; switch back to premium as soon as you can.

No one likes to think about running out of gas, but when it does happened it can be a stressful and dangerous situation. It is best to always keep an empty, approved gas container in the trunk of your car for emergencies.
However, if you do find yourself in such a situation, we want to help as quickly as we can. Call Towing Services Coquitlam and we can arrange to have your required type of fuel brought immediately by the closest tow truck.
