We understand that circumstances arise when you may be required to attempt a tire change yourself. We care for our client’s safety and want you to be informed. Below are some suggestions for how to react and change your tire if the situation calls or calling a tow truck is not an option.

Never risk your life to save the costs of replacing a ruined rim. Before attempting to repair a tire, always ensure the parking brake is engaged, the engine off and Consultant you owner’s manual for tire replacement.

If possible, use wheel wedges at the front of the front tires, if repairing/replacing a rear tire, and behind the rear tires, if replacing the front. Remove hub cap and loosen the lug nuts counterclockwise around a half turn until no resistance. Place of the jack near the tire you are changing; there should be an exposed area of the frame near the tire.

To increase stability and reduce settlement of the jack, place a 2x6 or appropriate sized cut of wood under the jack. Once secure and stable, raise the vehicle roughly six inches above the ground.

Never go under the vehicle during or after the process. Unscrew the lug nuts by hand and remove the damaged tire, mount the spare tire and replace all the lug nuts by hand as tight as possible. Lower the vehicle so that the tires are on the ground but so that the full weight of the vehicle isn’t yet fully on the tire. Tighten all lug nuts with the wrench as tight as you can and lower the vehicle completely. Replace the hubcap; put away all equipment and double check the pressure of the spare tire.

Do it yourself

If your tire pops or you realize your tire is flat, calmly reduce speed and pull over to the closest safest spot. Do not attempt to pullover near oncoming traffic, shoulders or blind spots, look for flat even ground to come to a rest. Once you are safe, consider searching for towing Coquitlam and we will arrive on the scene, just call 604-239-2312 Coquitlam Towing.

For anyone who has experienced a flat tire, it is a huge inconvenience. Your tire could pop while driving, this could put your life at risk as well as anyone else in the vehicle and other drivers. You could wake up to go to your vehicle to realize your tire is flat with a slow leak that happened over night. Your tires could be bald that could be an accident waiting to happen with lack of traction. Such damage could be cause by potholes, overloading and curbs, but no matter the cause the potential damage and risks can be mitigated with proper routine inspections and maintenance. We recommend the following tips for ensuring safety:

  • Pre-Drive inspection

Before driving, check your tires required specification requirement for compliance. This can be found typically on the driver’s front door jamb or the matching surface on the pillar. Further information on PSI can be found on the tire itself. Load capacity and inflation requirements are listed and should be followed. Check the pressure using a PSI gauge and inspect your tires for any gashes or punctures by foreign objects. Inspect your tire treads and reference the wear indicator bar to ensure your tires are still safe to drive.

  • Wheel Balancing & Rotation

More often than not if your wheels aren’t balanced t your steering could pull to one side and you vehicle may shake. We recommend taking the vehicle in for servicing. Further, if your wheels are worn out you should rotate your wheels as you probably have cup wear, you should get your shocks and struts checked.

  • Side Wall Check

Another area of potential leak is at the side wall. Minor scraping on the rim’s lip is okay, but if the bead is bent this may be a source of leak. Reference your owner’s manual for your tire rotation diagram.

Why hire a professional? Some newer vehicles have spare tires that are sometimes not inflated. Our tow trucks have compressed air and can quickly get you back on all four wheels.
