Don’t tow your own car for these reasons

Many people try to tow their own car, but don’t! Instead, call a Coquitlam Towing Company! Unless you are a qualified professional of course. Many people think they can attach a tow ball hitch and tow to their hearts content. But, this is a bad idea and dangerous for the following reasons.
Tow vehicle Rating – Every vehicle has a towing rating which refers to the vehicles capacity to tow safely. Vehicle ratings differ depending on your type of vehicle. If you do not know your towing rating or the weight of the load you want to tow you should not proceed. Towing beyond your vehicles rating can cause many problems such as blown out tires, overheated transmissions, broken suspensions, failing brakes etc.

Tongue weight – Tongue weight is based on the tow ball capacity and function and how much weight it is bearing. The tongue weight affects your ability to steer and too much or too little weight can impede your ability to steer safely. For these reasons it is not recommended to try and tow your own vehicle unless these measurements are known.
Tow bar Confusion- To properly and safely tow a vehicle you will require a tow bar. Again, tow bars have specific ratings, some tow bars are suitable for multiple vehicle types and others require specific ratings. When buying or using a tow bar, it is important to know such ratings so they can be used safely and for recommended use.

Local Regulations – Most people have not studied, been trained or know of the local laws and regulations as they pertain to towing on public roads. As a result, many people get heavily fined and more importantly can be a cause of harm or danger to others.

Separate braking system required- The added load on vehicles due to the momentum of the tow adds heavy stress to the brakes and the integrity of the vehicle. Not to mention the added challenge of simply driving and maneuvering with a tow. For this reason, many vehicles have separate braking systems installed. This is just yet another level of complexity and consideration that must be considered when a non-experienced person or professional attempts to tow their own car.
For all the reasons above and many others not mentioned here, it is best to leave it to the professionals and hire the services of a Coquitlam Towing Company to tow your vehicle.

The sooner you call the sooner we can get to you. Call quick while our drivers are close dial 604-239-2312.

How do you become a tow truck driver and what are the requirements? To be a Tow Truck Operator in BC requires a valid class 5 licence for non-air brake trucks. Reputable tow truck drivers can maintain a clean Driver’s Abstract. Similarly the quality tow truck companies have rigorous hiring and training process that includes a criminal record check. Some companies utilize such training mediums as BCAA and wreckmaster on a regular basis. When a company can obtain certifications from a reputable training outfit, it proves to the client that our team of drivers have the skills to work faster, safer and smarter than the competition.

Our number one priority is you, our customer. We recognise that the customer is our boss and we take the extra steps to ensure our customers are fully satisfied with the service we provide.

There are a few types of tow trucks classified by weight and body type. We like to outline these types of trucks to better allow our customers understand their needs. But first, there are a few definitions you will need to understand.

  1. Tow Truck – A motor vehicle that tows or carries a disabled, illegally parked or abandoned motor vehicle or a motor vehicle involved in an accident.
  2. GVWR – Gross vehicle weight rating

The classifications by weight (light, medium or heavy) and body type (tow-only or car carrier) are characterized as follows:

  • Light Duty: Trucks that have a GVWR of 8,600 to 10,000 pounds. You would call this type of tow truck for your automobiles, pickup truck and small vans.
  • Medium Duty: Truck that have a GVWR of 10,001 to 26,000 pounds. You would call this type of tow truck for medium sized trucks, buses and recreational vehicles. Although, this type of tow could still service smaller vehicles.
  • Heavy Duty: Trucks that have a GVWR of over 26,000 pounds. You would call this type of tow truck for large buses, trucks, trailers and heavy construction equipment.
  • Car carriers: This carrier is designed to transports one to three motor vehicles by loading the vehicles onto its flatbed via tilting or sliding mechanism. Car carriers are also referred to as slide backs, rollback, equipment transporters, or flatbeds. They can also tow vehicles via wheel lift or under lift to tow additional vehicles from behind. You would call this type of truck for automobiles, pickup trucks, small vans, transport large vehicles, farm machinery, construction equipment or vehicles that would be damaged by convention tow. The array of ability is due to the fact that carrier are up to 40 feet in length. You requirement and size carrier will need to be determined to maximize efficiency and common sense.

There are many functioning parts to a tow truck including but not limited to:

  • Booms
  • Winches
  • Cables
  • Snatch blocks
  • Chains
  • Towing Devices**
  • Dollies
  • Tow Truck Lights

The feedback from our customers is that the part of the tow truck they are most interested in is the towing devices. This is because this is what makes contact with their vehicle causing the most concern when it comes to damage or the like. We have outlined the various tow devices for our customers as defined below:

  • Tow Slings:  a device used for towing and lifting your vehicle where part of the load is supported on rubber belts. Tow slings can be used for automobiles, light trucks, small vans and is typically used for damaged vehicles or accident towing. The tow sling is versatile and flexible, it is ideal for damaged vehicles when other tow devices aren’t practical due to the extent of damage or irregularities.
  • Truck hitches: Not to be mistaken for a typical truck hitch, a tow hitch is used to position and support one end of a towed vehicle behind the tow truck. These are used for medium and heavy tows as described above for busses, motor homes etc. Tow hitches do perform the same as truck hitches but are used for towing lighter loads.
  • Wheel lifts: a device used for towing by means of lifting one end of a towed vehicle by the wheels. This device positions the load further back than tow slings and so helps mitigate the risk of damage to newer vehicles that utilize plastics or similar flimsy material susceptible to damage by a sling. The wheel lift can cause damage however, if it makes contact with any part of the vehicle other than the wheels. There are four general designs for the wheel lifts, Grid, Add-On Scoop, Claw or L-Bar. The wheel lift is typically used for light cars, trucks and or vans.
  • Under lifts: a device used for towing by means of lifting with forks on one end of the towed vehicle from under the axle strong structural member. Wheel lifts and auxiliary devices are sometimes used in conjunction to help secure the vehicle. Most of these lifts are also hydraulically powered and so can be used to raise, extend  and retract the boom.

Look for you tow truck driver’s lights that should start flashing from 500 feet away, both the hazard lights and flasher will be on. Your driver will be assessing the situation even before he/she is on the scene, based on the information you provided on the call. The driver will pull in front of your vehicle or onto the shoulder as possible. We may need to call the police in the unfortunate even your vehicle has broken down in the middle of a traffic lane. This way the police can help traffic so everyone is safe.

The number one safety rule both for you and tow operator is to be seen. That is why our operator will be wearing a reflective safety vest. Mentioned here and many times on our website, our number one priority is you and your safety. That is why we always advise to have your hazard lights on and pop open your hood if safe to exit your vehicle.

Upon arriving, we will assess what type of equipment is required for the tow from the list described and outlined above. We will review your vehicle with you and note any damage, that way you are comfortable knowing that you will get your vehicle back in the same shape. Sometimes, your vehicle cannot be towed by conventional tow systems due to damage. This mostly cannot be determined until we are on the scene unless a detailed analysis is provided over the phone. In the unlikely case your vehicle cannot be towed by conventional means, a car carrier will be dispatched. We will stay with you and ensure you are safe until arrival.

When your vehicle requires a tow, you should expect the following general routine from your operator as follows:

  • The tow will be backed into position
  • Your vehicle parking brake will be engaged to ensure it cannot roll freely
  • Wheel chocks/blocks will be used both on the disabled vehicle and the tow trucks
  • The tow device will be installed/placed as required
  • Your vehicle will be raised
  • Your vehicle will then be shifted into neutral and the wheel chocks/blocks removed
  • The steering wheel will be secured so that the wheels are aligned straight ahead
  • The vehicle will be lifted to at least six inches off the ground of the disabled vehicle
  • Wheel straps or wheel securing devices installed
  • Safety chains attached
  • Auxiliary tow lights on the trailing end of the disabled vehicle installed including stop lights, turn signals and taillights.
  • All windows and doors of the disabled vehicle will be closed and the hood latched and the vehicles transmission shifted to park.
  • Final walk around inspection and the disabled vehicles flashers turned off
  • Tow truck wheel chocks removed.

Check your instrument cluster/ dashboard for warning lights and chimes upon starting your vehicle. Some warning lights may be illuminated signalling a [problem that you may be able to address eliminating the need for a future tow or costly expense. You service engine light will illuminate when you first start your vehicle but should quickly turn off. If not, it means your vehicle has detected a malfunction. Similarly some vehicles have a wrench symbol that represent an electric throttle control and again illuminates when first igniting your vehicle. If this stays illuminated, it is best to report the fault to your nearest trusted dealer. Engine coolant temperature gauge is another important one to take note of. This gauge indicates engine coolant temperature, if the temperature rises to the red section, your engine is overheating and you stop the vehicle and shut it off as soon as safely possible.
